Abstract

Background: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) can extend to the tubal orifice and cause Eustachian tube dysfunction. Concordance between ETDQ-7 symptoms and objective tubal patency in CRS remains uncertain.

Objective: To evaluate the diagnostic performance of ETDQ-7 for objective tubal patency impairment in adults with CRS in Bali, Indonesia.

Methods: This analytical cross-sectional study enrolled 42 consecutive adults with CRS at a tertiary hospital from January to March 2026. ETDQ-7 scores ≥14.5 were considered abnormal. Tubal patency was assessed by acoustic impedance tympanometry. Chi-square testing, Spearman correlation, and multivariable logistic regression were performed.

Result: Mean age was 38.9 ± 11.6 years; 57.1% were female. Abnormal ETDQ-7 scores occurred in 24 patients (57.1%), and objective impairment occurred in 26 (61.9%). Impairment was more frequent with abnormal than normal ETDQ-7 scores (83.3% vs 33.3%, p = 0.002). Scores correlated with impaired patency (r = 0.58, p < 0.001). Abnormal ETDQ-7 independently predicted impairment (adjusted OR 7.84, 95% CI 1.74–35.29; p = 0.007).

Conclusion: ETDQ-7 is a useful outpatient triage tool for identifying patients with CRS who need objective audiological evaluation; it should not replace confirmatory testing.
